Hello. I'm Beth Carroll. Welcome to New Hampshire Outlook. The "Initiative for Corporate Responsibility and Investor Protection" is a new effort in the Granite State to put Ethics in business at the center of public conversation. In this program we'll hear from some of the most well-respected public figures on the issue -- and meet people working on the ground to show that people and profits do mix. The first in a series of forums addressing the need for ethics in education and corporate stewardship took place in early April at the University of New Hampshire. The focus was on corporate scandals, government regulation and the need for companies large and small to develop a culture of ethics. As former Securities and Exchange Commissioner Harvey Pitt explained, it's all about self-interest. |

Before the forum began, each of the participants sat down with the Initiative's President Myron Kandel. Former US Attorney General and former Pennsylvania Governor Dick Thornburgh was the principal investigator of the WorldCom bankruptcy proceeding. |

In 2002, Congress passed the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. Stanley Sporkin is a former US District Court Judge, former general counsel for the CIA and former Director of the Securities and Exchange Commisison's Enforcement division. He says the underlining premise of Sarbanes-Oxley is corporate gatekeeping. The act requires strict accountability by corporate officers. Sporkin told Kandel he has been advocating the gatekeeper concept for more than 30 years. |
